Chester is one of the UK’s greatest heritage cities and full of historic charm. There’s so many places that are waiting to be discovered, so we’ve rounded up some of the best things to do in Chester, which are all budget and family-friendly.

Circle the city walls

Built almost 2000 years ago Chester’s city walls are the oldest in Britain. They’re encircle the entire city, meaning you can walk around them without breaking your journey. They’re two miles in length, so give yourself around an hour for a leisurely stroll, taking in some great views over Chester and the River Dee. They’re a great way to take in Chester’s historic and unique character.

Chester City Walls

Location: you can access the city walls at various points throughout the city, with the four main gateways located at Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate, and Bridgegate

Go shopping at The Rows

The Rows are one of Chester’s most well-known landmarks. These buildings, found on Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street, and Bridge Street, date back to the Tudor period of the 13th century. Although some of the facades now are Victorian copies, they’ve been maintained with great care and are seriously impressive to look at. The Rows incorporate walkways, shops, and cafes, so make a stop here for a great photo opportunity and retail therapy.

Location: Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and Bridge Street

Day trip to the Ice Cream Farm

No trip to Chester is complete without visiting the Ice Cream Farm. With over 50 flavours of ice cream to choose from (yes, really), you’re completely spoiled for choice. And there’s more than just ice cream on offer too, with a huge outdoor garden and play area, adventure golf, and an arcade. Entry to the garden and ice cream parlour is free, with a small charge for some activities. The Ice Cream Farm is located just 25 minutes from our Chester hotel and well worth stopping in as part of a family day out.

Location: Newton Lane, Tattenhall, Chester, Cheshire, CH3 9NE

Spend the day at Chester Zoo

You might have seen Chester Zoo before on Channel 4 – the behind-the-scenes documentary, the Secret Life of the Zoo, was filmed here! Chester Zoo is the UK’s most popular zoo, and home to more than 21,000 animals. You can meet some of the most popular animals here, including elephants, giraffes, sloths, monkeys, and rhinos, as well as learn more about the zoo’s conservation work and how Chester Zoo work to protect wildlife across the globe.

Meet sharks at the Blue Planet Aquarium

Located just 15 minutes north of Chester in Ellesmere Port, the Blue Planet Aquarium features more than 100 displays, and is home to Europe’s largest collection of sharks. If you’re looking for something a bit different, the aquarium offers a shark diving experience, allowing you to come face-to-face with some tiger sharks!
