Otis Gilbert combines his job as a commercial archaeologist with writing about ancient history. He lives in Sheffield with partner Sarah, an early years teacher. They recently stayed at Village Hull while visiting the city’s spectacular aquarium, The Deep.

3,500 fish. And one very friendly turtle

“Our trip was all about the aquarium. We’ve wanted to go to The Deep for ages - it’s one of the biggest and most impressive attractions of its kind in the world. We really enjoyed the visit, particularly our close encounter with a sea turtle.

We’re definitely Village regulars. We’ve already enjoyed a stay at Village Edinburgh which was great - we’d definitely go back - and we’re thinking about booking Village Farnborough for the Air Show, although I think we’ll need to book early for that.

Service above and beyond

We're into fitness and the gym at Village Hull is brilliant, as is the pool and the amazing spa area. And I reckon they do the best breakfast of any hotel chain.

The staff are lovely, too, and really go out of their way if you need help. In Hull we called down to reception when Sarah needed a hair dryer, and they brought one up almost immediately - nothing is too much trouble.”

There are plenty of things to do in and around Hull

Hull is a friendly, fascinating city still basking in the glory of its status as UK City of Culture 2017. Village Hull is a few minutes from the Humber Bridge and just off the A63, with a park-and-ride facility into the city centre nearby. As well as The Deep, Hull has the Craven Park and KCOM sports stadiums, Hull Truck Theatre and a historic old town. And after a busy day’s sightseeing, you can relax in Village Hull’s spa, bar or in-house Starbucks.
