Five Fantastic Christmas 2016 Attractions

15 Dec 2016

Christmas is a time of year where British city centres transform into a hustle and bustle of festive smells, lights and sounds as the excitement for the holiday season fills the air. Here are five of our favourite attractions to get you in the festive spirit this Christmas – each with their own unique offering!

1. Liverpool Ice Festival

The more dexterous among us love ice skating at the numerous ice rinks that pop up around the country but what about an ICE SLIDE!? This year the Liverpool’s Ice Festival relocates to the city’s iconic waterfront with a huge 45m ice slide – the largest ice slide in the UK. As you would expect, there’s an impressive ice skating rink as well with a clear canopy that allows you to look up at the three graces whilst also keeping you dry!

Once you have built up a thirst from skating and sliding, you can head to the impressive ice bar to enjoy a drink surrounded by glistening ice sculptures carved from real ice! A variety of delicious cocktails are served and they even throw in a foil poncho on arrival to keep you warm.

2. Birmingham German Christmas Market

Out of all the Christmas markets in the UK, the biggest is undoubtedly Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market which is the largest German Christmas Market outside of Germany and Austria. Having successfully run for over 15 years, this year is unique in that this will be the first year that the market will run through the entire Christmas period!

There is plenty to tempt your taste buds at this massive German market due to Birmingham’s partnership with the city of Frankfurt. You’ll find a choice of some of the finest pretzels, schnitzel and German sausages with some classic German beer or mulled wine to wash it all down. A great range of handcrafted goods are also available with Birmingham’s Christmas Craft Market located nearby.

3. Christmas at Cardiff Castle

How about spending Christmas in a castle? That’s what Cardiff has to offer. Located right in the heart of the city, Cardiff Castle dominated the city’s skyline for a millennium and has a unique offering this Christmas. In amongst the spectacular mediaeval surroundings of the castle, Santa’s grotto can be found hidden away in the black tower beside the grand old fireside.

One of Wales’ leading heritage attractions, the castle will also be hosting a Christmas underground cinema from the 17th to the 20th of December. A fantastic selection of classic Christmas films will be screened including Home Alone, Elf, Die Hard and many more!

4. The ‘Yule Jog’ in London

This is something for the fitness fanatics among you – how about a Christmas running tour through London? Taking place on various evenings throughout December, the Yule Jog is a unique Christmas themed guided tour that takes you through some of the most atmospheric London streets and landmarks that are beautifully lit up at this time of year. If that’s not enough to get you in the Christmas spirit, your guide will even play Christmas tunes as you run! Don’t worry about lasting the pace – tours cover two distances, 6km and 12km and run at a variety of paces from gentle to fast.

Not only is this a truly unique way to experience London at Christmas, it’s a great way to work off those extra mince pies!

5. Edinburgh Hogmanay

Once Christmas day has passed, attention soon turns to the other big event of the holiday season – New Year.

Where better to see in 2017 than against the backdrop of Edinburgh castle and at one of the biggest New Year celebrations in the world? Each year Edinburgh’s Hogmanay in Princes Street offers a great selection of live acts, a ceilidh and one massive street party.

This year Paolo Nutini is headlining the main concert in Princes Street Gardens and there are plenty of other quality musical acts dotted on various stages on the street. Revelers are also treated to four incredible firework displays on the hour from 9pm until the bells at midnight.

Christmas Party Nights at Village Hotel Club
